Will Steffen: The Anthropocene, Planetary Boundaries and the Biosphere: Challenges of the 21st Century
Earth’s biosphere is currently undergoing a wide range of changes, the magnitude and rate of which have rarely been seen before during its 3.5 billion history. The concept of the Anthropocene captures many of these changes and puts them in a long-term perspective. This talk will explore the concept of the Anthropocene and the related concept of planetary boundaries (PBs), which is a guidance system designed to help humanity steer the Anthropocene towards a positive outcome. The focus will be on the biosphere integrity PB, one of the two core PBs, and on other boundaries that are related to it. Finally, the talk will explore what the Anthropocene means for the relationship between humanity and rest of nature, particular with the need for humanity with reconnect with the biosphere.
