A quick guide to IPBES, with special reference to the Europe Central Asia Assessment
Convened by: András Báldi
The global environmental crisis, the loss of biodiversity and degradation of ecosystem initiated responses from the society. After the failure of the 2010 target to halt the loss of biodiversity decline, the ecosystem service concept provides a new approach for presenting the unity of nature and society. The IPBES, Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services is a high level body of governments, which hopefully will fulfill a similar role as the IPCC. The goal of the symposium is to give an in depth intro to IPBES, especially to the Europe and Central Asia Assessment (ECA). This assessment is scheduled to be approved in early 2018, therefore ECCB2018 is perfectly timed to present it to the conservation biologists' community. It directly relates to Planetary Wellbeing, as all IPBES assessments, according to the IPBES conceptual framework, target well-being (or living in harmony with nature) as the final goal. There will be a diversity of approaches presented, from natural to social scientists.
